October 4th, 2009 The KC Dragons leave 11 players on base and come up short against the Mac N SeitzRed Sox 5-4 in theQuarter final of the Fall State Championship.
Every once in awhile a team has "one of those" games where they feel like they were the better team on the baseball field but because of a couple of breaks, etc.,the other team is able to pull the game out. That was how the KC Dragons felt Sunday morning in the Quarterfinal game of the State Championship. The KC Dragons had the bases loaded virtually every inning and could not get the big hit to close out the Red Sox. The KC Dragons jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first with an RBIby Matthew Drummond. The KC Dragons wanted to add more but stranded the bases loaded.
The Red Sox were held scoreless in the bottom of the first by starting pitcher Matthew Drummond.
AustinCrawford started the KC Dragon 2nd inning with a walk. Jonathan Roman then doubled and Adam Carrcame up and earned a RBI.When the inning finally ended the KC Dragons picked up three runs to make it 4-0. Once again, the KC Dragons left the bases loaded at the end of a inning.
In the bottom of the second, the Red Sox picked up 2 unearned runs making the score 4-2.
In the third inning, the KC Dragons were able to get their first two runners on but they were stranded as they did not score. The Red Sox picked up a run in the bottom of the third making the score 4-3 KC Dragons.
The KC Dragons threatened again in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Garrett Stephens hit what looked like a single up the middle. Unfortunately, the middle infielder for the Red Sox was out of position and caught the ball and touched second for a dramatic double play. Again, the KC Dragons ended a inning with the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the 4th, the Red Sox were able to muster up 2 runs to take the lead 5-4.
In the top of the fifth, with the time limit reached the Red Sox brought in their closer. The KC Dragons were able to get the tying run to second but could not hit him in making the final score 5-4 Red Sox.
Matthew Drummond's performance on the mound will not be forgotten. He pitched 4 innings only allowing one earned run. He only gave up 5 hits and had 4 strikeouts.
It was "one of those games" the KC Dragons will use as a stepping stone and move on.

The lead off hitter for the Barnstormers earned a walk to start the inning. That player then took a extra large lead off and Paul Bachelor recognized this and picked off the runner for the first out. With one out, the next batter for the Barnstormers walked. The KC Dragons called time and brought in their closer Trevor Munsch. The runner at first stole second. Down 7-5, the Barntormers gambled and tried to steal third and catcher Jacob Labau gunned down the runner for the second out. Again, the Barnstormers kept fighting. After a couple of hits and a walk, the bases were loaded. Trevor Munsch stayed mentally tough on the mound and was able to get a key ground ball to Max Storchthe shortstop to end the game and earn the save.
Both teams battled. Both teams played hard. But in the end the KC Dragons were victorious!

The KC Dragons first pool game on Saturday was against the Mac N Seitz Red Sox. It was a game that would be decided on walks. Both teams combined for 15 walks in the game. There were several hits in the game but not many balls made it to the outfield. When it was all said and done the final score was 7-2 Red Sox. The KC Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but could not sustain their lead. Just like in game one, the KC Dragons starting pitching struggled to find the strike zone. After 5 walks and 6 hits given up after 2 innings the KC Dragons found themselves down 12-2 after two innings. Again, the KC Dragons relief pitching was a bright spot as Sean Hosford came into relief and pitched two strong innings for the KC Dragons. Sean Hosford, Jacob Flores, Jacob LaBau, Austin Crawford, and Fletcher Pyle all had hits in the game.
It turned out to be a rough 0-2 start for the KC Dragons but perseverance was emphasized by the coaches heading into Sunday play.

From this point on the Dirt Dawgs from Shawnee found out what kind of Sunday pitcher Matthew Drummond can be. He stunned their offense for the rest of the game. For the next three innings, they were able to only musterone hit and the KC Dragons went on to a 13-3 Championship victory! Matthew had great support fromthe defense behind him.

Austin Crawford, the right fielder, makes an aggressive attempt at the ball but comes up short. He quickly gets back on his feet and fires the ball to home andthrows the runner outat home plate with a tag by the catcher, Sam Derks.

"QUOTE OF THE MONTH"
"I will act now. I will act now. I will act now. As a result, I will repeat these words each hour, each day, everyday, until the words become as much a habit as my breathing, and the action which follows becomes as instinctive as the blinking of my eyelids. With these words I can condition my mind to perform every action necessary for my success. I will act now. I will repeat these words again and again and again. I will walk where failures fear to walk. I will work when failures seek rest. I will act now for now is all I have. Tomorrow is the day reserved for the labor of the lazy. I am not lazy. Tomorrow is the day when the failure will succeed. I am not a failure. I will act now. Success will not wait. If I delay, success will become wed to another and lost to me forever. This is the time. This is the place. I am the person."
-Og Mandino
"CHAMPIONS KEEP PLAYING UNTIL THEY GET IT RIGHT"
“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.”
"The most important thing about my pitching is that I'm satisfied, that I know I'm being the best pitcher I can be."
Jim Palmer
